Maranjau
Prison
The Good Earth Trust is supporting the rehabilitation of
prisoners through vocational training in ISSB technology (block-making).
A 15,000 litre water-tank has been constructed for the prison,
so improving sanitation and demonstrating water-tank construction
techniques. Further tank construction and training is planned
for two nearby primary schools as a community service by the
prison. The project is being used as a pilot for demonstration
to the Ministry of Domestic Affairs and the Ministry of Housing.
The Good Earth Trust is providing training, technical support
and a small amount of cement and has supplied a brick-making
machine. |
Marema
and Maranjau primary schools project
Marema and Maranjau primary schools experienced a rapid influx
of new children this year as a result of the election violence
in early 2008. Access to drinking water is a problem encountered
by most schools communities and all consumption rationed.
The Boards of both schools agreed that having a large capacity
rain water harvesting tank in the school compounds will save
children from having to travel long distance each day to collect
their water and will improve the general health and wellbeing
of the school community. With funding from the The Body Shop
Foundation and the support and commitment of parents and teachers
at the school water tank construction in Marema and Maranjau
primary schools begin in October 2008. This is the first of
several plans involving the use of appropriate technology
in Central Province and we look forward to continuing to promote
ISSB as a practical, affordable contribution to reducing poverty
in Kenya. |
